Mrs. Nguyen Thi Lap, age 46, is residing at Hamlet Thanh Loi,Binh Thanh Village, Thanh Phu, Ben Tre in a house with no number. Her husband is away from home and she now living with her 2 sons and one daughter. Her job is to catch shellfish for the market and she is making about 35 cents a day but not on a regular basis, due to the availability of the shellfish. Her eldest son works in a saw mill for 2 dollars a day. Her 8 year-old daughter does not attend school but goes to a junk yard as far as Cau Van (Giao Thanh) to collect old bottles, getting a ride on the bus and making about 50 cents a day. With all that earning, it is just enough to feed the family of 4 (including the youngest son of 3 year-old) for the day. Her house is too small for 4 people, not to mention that it shares one of the walls with the house of her sister- a charity house given by the Government. The other wall is covered by a sheet of cloth but it barely shields them from the wind. The pillars are tiny and feeble, the house itself is bare and leaky. With her financial condition, there is no future in rebuilding or fixing up the house.
